Job Description: Teaching Artist / Status: Non-Exempt | Part Time

Primary Function/Summary:

Instructors at the studio have the unique opportunity to engage with, mentor, and inspire the students who participate in our programs. Instructors should let their passion and enthusiasm for their art form and the individuals they are training shine through everything they do.

Job Location

Onsite at the assigned studio, and at the discretion of the Student Success Manager.

Job Duties

  • Preparing for and teaching high quality classes

  • Showing care and concern for each individual student

  • Tracking student progress and making regular student evaluations

  • Communicating child and youth student progress to parents

  • Greeting prospects, teaching intro lessons, providing program recommendations and making sure prospects receive an enrollment conference at the appropriate time

  • Taking attendance and tracking DNS (Did Not Show) students, helping with contacts as needed

  • Understanding studio business operations and how their work influences enrollment and retention rates

  • Incorporating leadership principles and lessons into their teaching

  • Developing choreography and selecting costumes for dance performances

  • Assisting with rehearsals and performances as assigned by the studio director and/or lead instructor

  • Performing in studio events and productions as needed

  • Teaching the performance team as needed

  • Assisting with marketing efforts

  • Attending regular staff meetings

  • Continuing personal artistic development through ongoing training and workshops

  • Helping to keep the studio facility clean and in good condition

  • Assisting with studio special events like mass intros, open houses, student appreciation events, holiday parties, etc.

  • Cross training in administrative operations and assisting as needed

An Assistant Instructor works under the supervision of and assists the Instructor with the above responsibilities.

Teaching Artist Career Levels

At Broadway Babies and Kids, we believe great educators should have opportunities to grow just as our performers do. Our Teaching Artist Career Pathway recognizes training, experience, professional accomplishments, teaching excellence, leadership, and continued contribution to our artistic community.

Placement within each level is based on experience, qualifications, area of expertise, teaching ability, professional credits, leadership responsibilities, and the needs of the organization.

TRAINEE

Developing Teaching Artist | $20-$25/hour

For emerging educators beginning their journey in performing arts education.

Trainees typically have extensive performing arts training and experience as a Leader in Training, Teaching Assistant, classroom assistant, or similar support role.

Trainees work alongside experienced faculty while developing skills in:

  • Classroom leadership and management

  • Age-appropriate instruction

  • Lesson preparation

  • Technical demonstration and correction

  • Student engagement

  • Communication and professionalism

  • Broadway Babies and Kids teaching philosophies and standards

The goal: Develop the skills and experience necessary to become an independent Teaching Artist.


LEVEL 1

Teaching Artist | $25–$30/hour

Teaching Artists are qualified to independently lead foundational and recreational classes within their area of expertise.

Level 1 faculty demonstrate:

  • Strong foundational training in their discipline

  • Effective classroom management

  • Age-appropriate lesson planning

  • Clear communication and technical instruction

  • Ability to engage, encourage, and develop young performers

  • Reliability, preparation, and professionalism

  • Commitment to continued training and professional development

The goal: Become a confident, consistent educator who creates an engaging and technically strong classroom.


LEVEL 2

Experienced Teaching Artist | $30–$35/hour

Experienced Teaching Artists bring established teaching experience and advanced knowledge of their discipline to the classroom.

Level 2 faculty may teach multiple levels and prepare performers for:

  • Performances and productions

  • Competitions

  • Auditions

  • Evaluations and advancement

  • Conservatory and advanced training

These educators demonstrate strong student development, technical progression, classroom leadership, communication, and the ability to adapt instruction to individual performers.

Level 2 faculty may also choreograph, direct, coach competition material, or contribute to specialized programming.

The goal: Develop performers beyond foundational training while becoming a trusted and accomplished member of the faculty.


LEVEL 3

Senior Teaching Artist | $45–$60/hour

Senior Teaching Artists are highly experienced educators with a college degree in the performing arts and artists who bring advanced technical knowledge, significant teaching experience, and professional performance expertise to Broadway Babies and Kids.

Senior Teaching Artists may:

  • Teach advanced and pre-professional performers

  • Lead specialty classes and intensives

  • Coach auditions and competitions

  • Choreograph or direct productions

  • Prepare performers for collegiate, conservatory, and professional opportunities

  • Mentor developing faculty

  • Contribute to curriculum and program development

Level 3 faculty demonstrate exceptional teaching ability, artistry, professionalism, student development, and leadership.

The goal: Serve as a senior artistic educator who develops advanced performers while helping strengthen the overall quality of our faculty and programs.


LEVEL 4

Master Teaching Artist & Faculty Leader | $60–$85+/hour*

Level 4 represents the highest level of artistic expertise and educational leadership within our Teaching Artist Career Pathway.

Master Teaching Artists and Faculty Leaders are established professional performers, directors, choreographers, vocalists, educators, and industry professionals who bring significant professional expertise to our performers and faculty.

Level 4 artists may:

  • Teach master classes and professional intensives

  • Lead advanced and pre-professional training

  • Serve as Department Leads or Program Directors

  • Develop curriculum and new programming

  • Establish technical standards and progressions

  • Mentor and train faculty

  • Coach performers for professional and collegiate opportunities

  • Collaborate with artistic leadership on program development

  • Bring current professional practices and industry expectations into our training

Level 4 placement recognizes not simply years of experience, but professional accomplishment, demonstrated expertise, educational excellence, leadership, and the ability to develop both performers and educators.

The goal: Elevate the artistic and educational standards of Broadway Babies and Kids while helping shape the next generation of performers, artists, educators, and leaders.

Master classes, guest artist engagements, department leadership, curriculum development, choreography, directing, and administrative responsibilities may be compensated at separately negotiated rates.
